Your
Life + 70 years!
Frequently Asked Questions
CopyrightsNow™
strongly recommends that you register your work with
the U. S. Copyright Office to ensure that you have the full weight
of the law on your side if you are infringed.
Once you start a new project (even before it is published) is the
best time to register.
What
is a copyright?
Copyright is your exclusive legal right to use and distribute
your work and to receive compensation - while excluding others
from using your work without permission.
This protection is available for both
published and unpublished works.
Why should writers be concerned about copyrights?
A copyright provides protection against illegal copying, theft or
plagiarism of your work! While owning a copyright is automatic under
U. S. copyright law, in order to enforce your rights you must
register your copyrights with the U. S. Copyright Office!
How do
I get a
copyright?
The good news is that you
automatically own a copyright when you create an original work...
such as a
book, a play, a blog, a photograph or artwork. While not
mandatory, it is good practice to give notice of your copyright.
You do this by placing a copyright notice on your work, such as:
© 2016 John Doe (using the copyright symbol © or
(c), the year, and your name)
What
is my benefit of U. S. Copyright Office registration?
While you may own a copyright, you cannot enforce the
copyright unless you register! This means that if some
copies your work or plagiarizes your work, you cannot sue them
unless you have previously registered your copyrights!
To sue an infringer to enforce your
copyrights, you must register within 3-months of publication
or before publication and before any infringement occurs,
in order to gain maximum copyright protection... and claim up to $150,000
in statutory damages plus attorney fees
for any infringement.
A one-time fee protects your work for your Lifetime + 70
years! Registration is available to
both U. S. and International Authors!
Does a copyright protect my work in
other countries?
While no creative work is automatically protected worldwide, there
are international treaties which provide protection automatically
for all creative works as soon as they are fixed in a medium. There
are two primary international copyright agreements, the Buenos Aires
Convention and the Berne Convention.
Can a copyright be owned by my
company or organization?
Yes. The owner - also known as a Claimant - may be your
company, if you are an employee of the company or created the work
under a
'work-for-hire' agreement, or transfer your rights to a company.
During your
CopyrightsNow application process, there are simple options to
let you register either as an Individual or Organization.
Do 3rd party manuscript
uploads protect my copyrights?
No. Many companies may offer a manuscript upload and a reference
code with timestamp. However, to fully protect and enforce your
copyrights from infringement in the U.S., you must register your
work with the U. S. Copyright Office.

Copyright Office
* Just answer a few questions on CopyrightsNow. For many applications with only one author and one copyright
owner - you can typically finish your application in 5-10 minutes
with a few clicks ... and for more complex applications with
co-authors and other complexities, you can usually finish in under
20 minutes! Your information is saved as you work, so you can
always log-off and return later to complete your application. Then
just click
'Submit'
to start the registration process!
What is unique about CopyrightsNow™?
With many choices of copyright applications, CopyrightsNow asks easy
questions... and uses artificial intelligence (A/I) to guide you through
an optimum process of automatically selecting the lowest-cost
application for your specific type of registration! It
provides real-time error checks and data validation... and a
human
specialist
reviews your work to provide added
assurance that your application meets
format guidelines of the U. S. Copyright Office!
What if I have a question?
We make it easy to get answers with on-line
Help!
Just click ? from any screen
to get detailed instructions. And for more specific answers,
we provide responsive e-mail customer support!
What happens after I submit my
application?
Each application is reviewed by a specialist within 48
hours...
for conformance with guidelines and
to identify potential
inconsistencies... and communicates
to you via e-mail!
Once your review is complete, your application is transformed and
electronically transferred to the U. S. Copyright Office e-CO
system.
Then, you receive an e-mail
confirmation with your U. S. Copyright Office account, case number
and log-in
credentials to pay your filing fee and upload or mail-in a copy of
your work.
Why can't I just use
government forms or e-filing system?
You can... however, this is a
complex process requiring much more time to learn and properly prepare.
You do not receive an e-mail confirmation of your
registration... and your work doesn't get reviewed for several
months. Also, the
e-filing system is not compatible with many mobile devices.
The U. S. Copyright Office e-filing system has occasional outages
which may cause delays, potential loss of data or reliability
issues.
By using CopyrightsNow, you get 24/7 access and your data is
automatically saved as you work... a specialist reviews your
application within 48 hours... reducing frustration, missing
data and delays which may later cause rejection when your application
gets vetted by a government employee (in several months).
Who should use CopyrightsNow?
CopyrightsNow is designed for non-technical creative people applying
for copyrights... so you don't need to be a copyright expert or
publisher!
The App has extensive error and data consistency checks to help
prevent bad or questionable data from being entered in the first
place... this will speed-up processing!
Upon submittal, you
get a confirming e-mail with a time-stamped copy of your pending
application!
Is Help available if I need
assistance?
The system provides
'context-sensitive' on-line Help - so you get immediate answers to
questions based on the specific screen you are on! Just click ? to
get detailed context-sensitive help. If you need additional help,
our customer support team is available via e-mail to answer
questions.
